Kottappara

Kottappara Hills also known as Kottappara Mala is a viewpoint located at the Idukki District in the state of Kerala, which is known as the gods own country. To reach Kottappara hills you need to travel around 22 kilometres from the nearest town Thodupuzha or around 2 kilometres from Vannapuram which is a smaller town near the destination. The only way you can reach the destination is via a road which is not that great in condition. You can see beautiful sceneries on both sides of the road once you start the climb uphill.

How to reach Kottappara?
If you are coming from far, set your maps towards either Thodupuzha or Vannapuram according to your convenience. From there, it is better to ask any of the local people who will not hesitate to guide you. This is necessary because there are several smaller roads and you might get confused about which one to take. If you are taking the correct route, you will be experiencing high-angle uphills which might take a toll on sub 100cc vehicles. Once you start the ascent, you can see several beautiful locations and sites from where you can click many pictures.

Once you near the destination the road becomes flat for a few meters and you will find so many bikes parked in front of a statue of St.Mary. That is where you park your bikes and head out for a 100-meter walk. The end of the walk will bring you to an opening which showcases the view of the whole lower ranges and the small towns below. That is a pleasant view to look at. So, that is your location, Kottappara Hills. Be careful on the edges and the rocks might be a little slippery. It would be great if you go there on mornings, around 7AM as the whole valley would be covered with mist, a rare scene in these regions and do not forget your cameras.



Kattadikadavu

KattadiKadavu is one of the arising trekking destinations near Vannapuram(nearby Thodupuzha), Idukki District, Kerala. It is one of the promising destinations in Idukki with its panoramic view of hills and misty atmosphere.

Kattadikadavu can be easily accessed from Muvattupuzha(35km) or Thodupuzha(25km) or from Idukki Township(33km). It is also known as Kattadi Kunnu or Marathakamala in the surrounding areas.

Anayadikuthu

The Gods Own Country is covered with natural waterfall and one of the not so explored named, Anayadikuthu Falls is a 22 km trek from Thodupuzha in the district of Idukki. It is a place to be loved by the devotees and tourists.

Anayadikuthu is located near Thommanankum. This is the place where the river flows to the rocks. This is the only place where the waterfall flows from the bottom.



Thommankuthu

Thommankuthu is a waterfall located in Thodupuzha Thaluk in Idukki District of the southern state of Kerala, India. It is popular tourist spot in the state and one the major centres of eco-tourism in Kerala. It situated in the southern part of Western Ghats mountain range.

Location: Thommankuthu is located 18 km from Thodupuzha. Nearest towns are Karimannor and Vannappuram and Udumbannoor which are nearly 10 km from Thommankuthu.

Trekking: Thommankuthu waterfall is a seven - step waterfall located in forest. A trek of 12 km through the forests is possible.

Meenuliyanpara

Meenuliyan Para or Meenulinjan para is a mountain peak situated near Thodupuzha in Idukki district, in the Indian state of Kerala. Meenuliyan para is noted for a huge rock that rises more than 4000 feet and has about two acres of evergreen forest on top of it. The rock itself covers an area more than 500 acres. The surface of this huge rock mountain looks like fish scales and hence the mountain gets the name ‘ Meenuliyan Para’.

The lofty peaks of the Meenuliyan para are covered in mist on rainy days but on a fine day the lower Periyar area, Bhoothathankettu and even Ernakulam are visible from these heights. Meenuliyan para is located 47 km from Muvattupuzha and 51 km from Thodupuzha. Meenuliyan para can be reached only by a pedestrian path for about 3 km from Pattayakkudy, in Vannappuram Panchayath in Idukki district.



Palkulamedu

Palkulamedu, is one of the most Ideal trekking locations in Idukki. A small fresh water pool at the top of the hill adds up another jewel to the enchanting beauty.
A view of the Periyar gorge from the Palkulamedu Peak is much admirable. The vast spans of evergreen Hills, one after another fills till the horizon and the beautiful view of Sunset and Sunrise gives makes this place an ideal view point.

It is located at the distance of 12 km from Idukki. It is addressed at an elevation of 3125 meters above from the sea level. The place is of great interest for the tourists of any age. It is an ideal destination for adventure makers and trekkers. The beauty of Palkulamedu is indescribable and it offers the perfect ambiance of the nature. The place can be visited in any time of the year as the weather remains calm all the time except monsoon which falls in the month of June to September. The place is near to the natural destination Idukki and it carries the same historical events in and around. As the historical information of Idukki district still holds the information which dates back to early 10th century and the region Palkulamedu falls under this region. The archeological relics and some of the places remind the early life of the Stone Age. In today the place has now become one of the top tourist destinations in Kerala tourism.



Malankara Dam

Malankara dam is a gravity dam constructed across Muvattupuzha river for irrigation purposes. The dam is constructed to make use of the tail water from the Moolamattom power house. The project is run under the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project and KSEB. The artificial lake covers an area of around 11 square km.

Constructed across the Thodupuzha river which is tributary to the Muvattupuzha river, for the purpose of irrigation, this reservoir is also a tourism spot.This artificial lake is located near to the Thodupuzha – Moolamattom Road (State Highway 33) covering an area of around 11 square km. The reservoir is ideal for boating and fishing.Unlike the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams, the Malankara dam is open to tourists round the year.Also a park is under construction nearby to the reservoir covering an adjacent 15 acre island.



Munnar

The idyllic hill station Munnar - famous for its tea estates, exotic lush greenery and craggy peaks, is located in the Western Ghats, in the state of Kerala. It serves as the commercial centre for some of the world’s largest tea estates. In addition, Munnar has many protected areas which are home to endemic and highly endangered species like the Nilgiri Thar and the Neelakurinji.

One of the biggest tea-plantation area of South India, Munnar is one of the most beautiful and popular hill-stations of Kerala. Situated on the banks of three rivers- Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru, Munnar is also blessed with natural view-points apart from the tea-plantations. Munnar is divided into Old Munnar, where the tourist information office is, and Munnar, where the bus station and most guest houses are located. The Eravikulam National Park, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and tea plantations are its major attractions.



Vagamon

1100 meters above sea, far way from the loud city culture, lush greenery and serenity to gift every visitor, Vagamon could be your quiet offbeat hill station in Kerala away from maddening tourist crowds.

If you are a forest lover, the first place you should visit in Vagamon is the Vagamon Pine forest, which is the major tourist attraction of this place. A very popular spot for movie shootings, Vagamon forest is actually a man-made forest which was created during the British era. The forest overlooks the entire Vagamon valley and is a beautiful place where you can go for a long walk, or just sit under a pine tree and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

The other major tourist attraction in Vagamon is the Marmala Waterfall, which is one of the top draws of the area. Located along the Erattupetta route, the Marmala Waterfall is an epitome of the serenity and tranquillity of Vagamon itself. Nestled amidst plentiful greenery, the waterfall, which falls inside a private estate, was an obscure, undiscovered spot till even a few years ago. Today, however, it is a major tourist spot frequented by visitors all year round.



Thekkady

Home to the country's largest Tiger Reserve- Periyar, Thekkady is a great way to enjoy a jungle vacation.

Periyar National Park, being a major attraction, is one place where you can enjoy bamboo rafting in the catchment area of Mullaiperiyar Dam, hiking, and in the midst of the wilderness, shopping! Popular for its good eating joints, you can also enjoy its vast stretches of spice gardens and various adventure sports. You can also enjoy a night trek in the wilderness of Periyar. The early morning ride in the boat within the sanctuary is an extremely awesome experience and you might be able to spot wild elephants, bisons, wild boars, various kinds of birds, etc. Anakarra is also located nearby which is a great place to enjoy nature. Murikaddy is located around 5 km from the city and is famous for coffee and spices plantations. Chellar Kovil is another area located nearby with a lot of picturesque waterfalls and cascades. Mangala Devi Temple, located at an altitude of 1337 m and at a distance of around 15km from Thekkady opens only on the Chitra Pournami Festival.



Idukki Dam

With remains of Chera dynasty, Vembolinad Kingdom, and European plantations in the later years, this rugged hill resort is best known for its wildlife sanctuaries, beautiful bungalows, tea factories, rubber plantations and forests.

Idukki's speciality lies in its arch dam which is the largest in the country, and the Anamudi, which is the highest peak in India, south of the Himalayas. Idukki is situated at the top of the Western Ghats surrounded by mountains. The arch dam built across the Kuravan Kurathi mountain is incredible and beyond description. Attached to this dam of 650 feet length and 550 feet height, two other dams are also there in Kulmavu and Cherunthony. This beautiful high range district of Kerala is geographically known for its rugged hills and dense forests.

The district headquarters of Idukki is located at Kuyilimala in Painavu. A land-locked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. It is one of the districts in the state which has some wildlife sanctuaries and offers abundant scope for promotion of eco tourism if infrastructure facilities and proper promotional activities are provided. It is also famed for its spice production, tea plantations and rubber cultivation.
